At the end of October, I’m renewing a road trip partnership which originally had a run out in Oz: we’ll be leaving Memphis and spending the next few days making our way to Chicago. Given most sites calculate this as an 11 hour drive, getting there sounds like it should be easy.
Maps, books, guides and a few web sites. That’s all it takes to plan a road trip, I thought.
Right now, I’m not feeling the ease.
Our plan is getting adventurous, a journey that gets us there across the mid-west via Kansas and Nebraska! Now, I’ve plugged in a number of routes into the road trip planner over on Rand McNally and the trip is definitely do-able, getting us to the Windy City by Friday evening. However, it’s going to be five solid days in the car and given the time of year, a fair part of that is going to be in the dark. When I think of it that way, the fun vanishes and I see it for what it really is: a state ticking exercise. At the end of the trip, we’ll have done it because we can, but it’s going to be a few thousand miles of whoosh… and not much else. But I want to go to Kansas and Nebraska! It’s an Arkansas for McDonalds kind of thing.
So, it’s back to the drawing board and thinking of trading them for a little jaunt up into Wisconsin. Well, we’ll see. I’m also thinking Thursday afternoon would be a good time for us to arrive in Chicago, giving us the full weekend there before we fly home.

Glad to see the plans are taking shape. We must be sure that someone gets an Arkansas experience this time. I can’t believe it’s thisclose.
