So, I’m watching Con Air. Can you believe I’ve never seen this film? Well I haven’t. Ever! Anyway, when I’m contemplating recording a movie, I usually look at the year it was made, as for some reason, I need to figure out why I should watch a lot of movies that were made in the ’80s and early ’90s - I think the issue is the fact that I’m paying to watch “old” movies when they’re being shown on Sky Movies. Something like that, anyway.

I select Con Air from the playlist and I’m reminded it was made in 1997 (although in true Sky+ style the plot outline for the film is: “Highlights from the previous 24 hours in the Big Brother house”). 1997, that’s like just the other year, I think to myself. The film starts, music I recognise in the background moves to the fore. LeAnn Rimes’ “How Do I Live?” Omigod! Just a few bars of music, the singing of a part verse smacks me straight on the forehead and brings it home that 1997 is almost 10 years gone, that it isn’t just the other year past.

I’m left gobsmacked, but am reminded that the recollection of a tune is more potent in dating a period of my life and memories so much more than a four figure number EVER could.
